Synopsis
"In a near future, the NOVA company wants to hide sophisticated mind-control systems behind its video games. Silver02, their best programmer, is intercepted by rebel Hackers who want to thwart NOVA’s plan. Already compromised by the use of hallucinogenic drugs, Silver02’s mind will begin to waver definitively between real and virtual."
Once the selection done, we had to choose the film that would launch our First Edition’s reviews. One that’d clearly cover everything we love and want to support with this festival: creative willingness, a strong identity, also a few imperfections…? « Blue Sunset » turned out to be a perfect candidate.
Domiziano Cristopharo obviously instils all his passion in this singular piece of art. We here enjoy the uncompromising punk concept, the 80s’ aesthetics, the gory side, and global madness. The blend of practical effects and 3D digital technology pays off, accentuating the hypnotic and surreal overall aspect. Make-ups and props are very nice too.
The story confuses the viewer— hard to say if this is a good or a bad point. Some scenes and details may be cool when written to provoke or to establish a nonconformist imagery (you’ll get your share of nihilistic winks, science-fiction themes, drug, pocketpussy and naked character eating on the crapper); but as the narration goes along, it becomes difficult to relate to anything. In our first viewing, some of us could barely see that several parts were played by the same actor (Daniele Arturi). Actually the scenario seems to hesitate between a built story or a total trip, and therefore will fail to bring a satisfactory conclusion.
The sound charmed us with two elements: the superb music, and the inventive & special treatment of certain characters’ voices. Sound effects remain shy, sometimes missing. As for photography, you can’t deny the colours have been carefully considered. A few shots might look almost amateurish (mainly the wide ones), which kinda weaken the universe. Luckily the editing opts for more medium shots and closeups, very efficient.
Anyway the whole thing is quite unique and will impress your eye, ear and mind! There should be more independent experiences like this in Cinema.
Conclusion
Here’s a director who stamps his touch on every level, to deliver an artistic object with a crazy freedom that, if it won’t suit everyone, is definitely interesting for its intensity.
