Marie-Valérie Jeantelot / Ireland / 3 minutes
Synopsis
A man, a woman, and the time going by… But does it?
This Broken Angel’s experimental electronic track sounds like a wistful tape played in reverse. And to be fair, the black & white music-video offered here perfectly corresponds.
Made with intermittent pictures like a randomly fast-motioned film, plus timelapses of nature, town and space, “Sub-Bleached” surprises. It looks beautiful. Contemplative and epileptic at the same time, with a certain elegance. The very well-balanced editing stands by its concept without making you nauseous.
Interesting, but the whole thing maybe lacks something (an outcome?) to go beyond the simple experimentation. However the total runtime— 3 minutes and a half— turns out to be short enough to avoid any feeling of redundance, and also important enough to afford to charm the viewer with its swirl.
Conclusion
With this video as original as disconcerting, Marie-Valérie Jeantelot manages to create the illusion of what a sound track would look like if it were directly and instinctively translated into images.
