BREAD, BREAD, JUVENAL

Updated: Mar 30

Ricardo Villarroel Saavedra / Chile / 22 minutes

Synopsis

Juvenal owns a small bakery in Valparaíso. His poetic texts did not go unnoticed by a young theatre company that proposed, through them, to reconnect the people of the Port with the memories of their bakers— like Juvenal’s father who, back in the 1940s, started the familial tradition.

Thanks to its solid subject, this little documentary makes an original link between two facets of a same person: trade and poetry. Bakery and art? A portrait that works by its simplicity and moderation. After a very good sober and calm intro, you’ll follow, without feeling time, Juneval Pizarro doing his job in the first part and singing in public in the second one. Will slip in: extracts from performances of the theatre company adapting his texts, and a couple of quick slices of life.

The protagonist will be the only one to speak. He delivers a few keys to his history and his approach via a voice-over, never in an on-camera interview, which gives to the whole thing a humble side, paradoxical mix of intimism and distance, as if the director wanted to remain like a polite eyewitness and story-transmitter. Emotion won’t be lacking anyway, especially when Juvenal directly talks to his audience.

The way of filming is interesting, always well composed, often with wide shots, which will make the occasional close-ups even more enjoyable. Let’s also highlight the excellent editing.

Conclusion

A film that we liked discovering and that, on second viewing, came out to be one of the most honest and well-dosed amongst the ones we had the opportunity to collect.
