Synopsis
Helen suffers from a rare trouble: phobia of chalk! In Helsinki’s streets, feeling encroached by several chalk figures, she tries to face her fear.
This very-short film rests on a simple intention: to incorporate a little bit of poetry in the common settings of a big city. From the first shot, with effective movements, the director manages to catch us in his universe: we follow Helen, she is the centre, the beginning and the end of this mute story, prettily accompanied by Mirko Rizzello’s music and Keith Haring’s artistic aura.
Eveliina Puustinen’s special acting in this film is an essential plus: thanks to her surprising guilelessness and her performance’s paradoxical simplicity, we immediately feel attached to her. Chalk drawings scatter as her character walks, on the asphalt, along the roads, on the side of the buildings… How could she escape that? A scene in the Amos Rex Museum will be a game-changer.
Visually, the film is quite nice but irregular: a few crude pictures look out of place compared to other thorough and poetic framings.
The writing is clear and minimalist, but would have benefitted from adding a couple of incidents to lead to the final resolution. The directing is slick, and short sequences come one after another with wipe transitions for more distinctiveness.
Conclusion
Cute and a little outlandish, and being registered in an appropriate category, « Calxophobia » could not leave us indifferent.
