María Gisèle Royo / Spain / 41 minutes
Synopsis
"A group passionate about art and culture confine themselves in Segovia, to rehearse and study texts in old Spanish. Here is the creative process of the last work they have brought to the stage, continuing to make us reflect on the ambiguity of justice and the exercise of political power."
Impossible to miss this handsome film with an enthralling theme. We dive at the heart of a troupe (the Nao D’amores company) working on a quite unexplored art genre— pre-Baroque tragedy.
The documentary’s overall writing is very good: no structure is explicitly displayed, yet we go from one subject to another without boredom nor confusion. In order to engage us, the director collected a lot of material and handles various ingredients in her editing.
On one hand traditional interviews (producer, musical director, designer, advisor…). Passionate speakers explain their process and dissect its particularities. On that occasion you’ll even see a few Renaissance archives used as basis for the show.
On the other hand, the fulfilment: fascinating pictures filmed on-set. Creation’s backstage, specific difficulties about the work on the text, debriefings after rehearsals or presentation (in churches!)— María Gisèle Royo is generous with her viewers, thanks for that. However strangely: the actors’ speaking is missing… Of course they express themselves on stage, but their personal record probably would’ve been judicious to complete the vision of the project and to dispel a few repetitions occurring in the speech over time. The extracts of their performances remain delightful.
The whole thing is very pleasant to watch and hear, so the form is also an achievement. By the way pictures are shot in Cinemascope, uncommon format for this kind of report, which here shows a sincere artistic approach.
Conclusion
An elegant and enriching piece of art.
