OCCURRENCES OF QUESTIONABLE SIGNIFICANCE

Dave Lojek / Poland / 9 minutes

Synopsis

“When forest animals invade our cities, the world is in disarray. This obscure short pinpoints postmodern tropes of consumerism, eroticism and art, with an homage to the theater stage and references to literature.”

Little gem of oddity, « Zdarzenia o Wątpliwym Znaczeniu » orchestrates several characters with animal heads (three in particular) within recreated-on-stage sceneries. Smart concept: thereby every scene makes a lasting impression. These theatre settings in artificial lights without background create zany pictures, one situation per sketch. Visually, David Lynch and Tim Burton’s references seem the most evident. Beautiful masks signed by Anna Chadaj and Eva Farkašová add a lot to this universe.

Screenplay allows a few tone variations. If an almost-grotesque humour prevails— a kind of absurd that really charmed us,— poetry is sometimes just around the corner (for instance, the falling autumn leaves detail).

Situations come one after another until a lovely finale: whereas we were starting to feel familiar with this bubble midway between allegory and surrealism, two last occurrences wake us up. First, something we did not want to see threatens to appear on camera, but shirks out of sight at the last moment (cut editing, then decentred composition). Next, the ultimate repurposing of a type of object that was admitted for a certain use until then.

Before this good ending occurs, a few more scenes wouldn’t have been superfluous, given how those nine minutes fly by. Anyway we are fans!

Conclusion

With this atypical short film, Dave Lojek could not miss another selection with us!
