Dave Lojek / Austria / 4 minutes
Synopsis
Kurdish Iraqi poet and actor Zeravan Khalil fled war and genocide. His work being forbidden in his home country, he now travels with his dog through Central Europe’s mountains.
We did not expect this kind of approach. But Dave Lojek is clever and, by submitting this film in this category, gives to the term “Adventure” a totally specific and interesting outlook, which finds its place in our assortment.
The straight and simple vision of the director quickly makes the two characters relatable, and as well includes some funny details (that we loved). The poet is serene, resourceful and mischievous; the stoic doggy thoughtfully keeps his company. A few little down-to-earth scenes by the river, pared-down in their style, come one after another. Calm of Nature prevails, conveyed to the audience through pretty pictures, a clear sound, discreet score, silences, and a fluid editing.
You’ll have to wait for the ending to hear a few words via a voice-over— a poem of course. However this conclusion feels abrupt within the general pace, and the almost-underwhelming last shot before the end credits could have been better.
Thanks to the way it treats its subject, « Refugee Poetry » still manages to touch and make us dream.
Conclusion
A minimalist short-film that reminds you that traveling subsumes not only geographic trip but also internal musings and little daily things.
O.N-P.
« Refugee Poetry » joins official selection for the Little Croco Festival’s first edition, nominated in the Adventure category.
