LCF RETROSPECTIVE

We are 5 Crocos. Each one of us had to choose 2 films.

Let’s look back on 10 striking works amongst the LCF’s three sections!

First, our last favourite to date: the Damien Morel’s comedy, awarded in Edition n°3. Main quality: funny characters, endearing and well-played. Sometimes the short-film format is frustrating; but this one, thanks to a nice script and a good mastery of pace, gives the sensation that it has found its ideal setting.

If the previous film is conspicuous by its simplicity, ZUAS looks like an antithesis! It is complex, tortuous, dark, dense… and we love that. Never weakened by its independent economy, Garvit Singh’s feature-film crushes the audience under the weight of its harsh personality. For whoever wants an initiatory, psychoanalytical and disturbing thriller, ZUAS is a gem.

The casualness and comical nature of this Dave Lojek’s flick don’t do a disservice to a concomitant writing quality, that we wanted to highlight with an honourable mention in our first Edition. That one particularly entertained us, but every short film by this filmmaker is worth the detour anyway.

The Crocos enjoy things like Gothic, elegance, and Poe’s literature. Tim Luna’s film therefore had to enchant us. It is gorgeous. Immediate. A world of morbid, melancholic fantasy— and maybe frightening.

One of the best medium-length works we ever got the opportunity to watch, even out of LCF. With his old film roll, his base of poetic texts, his sets choices, his oddball experimentations, his generosity, Dmitri Frolov does wonders. We’ll also remember the excellent interview he gave us on the occasion of the prizes for this film.

The Lucho Villegas’s feature did not win any award or mention in our first edition, which was well-stocked. Proof that final laurels are not everything: this musical film stays with us even a couple of years later— its nice and realistic characters, its sweet atmosphere, its serene investigation. Very cool.

Raw-action movie with no real story. Not what appeals us at first glance. However, it left our submissions with an official selection then a “Best Concept” mention! The stuntmen’s choreographic performances and the form exploration (plus a very good ending) through Tony Christian’s directing hit home.

Perhaps our biggest favourite from Edition 1. Crazy personality, in aesthetics as well as in the Frères Michel’s writing… And a superb acting. Only disappointement: we don’t have the sequel!

We couldn’t imagine, while discovering Felipe Cataldo’s film, that it would stay in our heads. This feature’s abstruse nature just gradually increased our attachment. By the way it’s the one that launched the idea of the Best Concept mention, that we kept thereafter in each edition. It is also one of our most-read articles (which delights us). We cannot really recommend this flick to everyone, but if you’re not scared of experimental thingies… Go for it!

Via our festival, we wanted to promote films with imperfections too, where passion finally prevails. This thriller by Andy Bowles was accordingly one of our first selections. The patent motivation got us. If in our review we have not been very lenient about certain points, the main thing we received and retain on balance is the enthusiastic pleasure this crew seems to have had while creating.

And as it’s painful to stick to so few films after a total of 56 selections, 168 received submissions, 77 hours of viewing time, let’s haphazardly quote in addition these articles that we particularly enjoyed writing:

And let’s not forget that we gathered a few interviews! The recent one with Christophe Schaeffer especially got us interested. All the articles, reviews as well as interviews, will remain available on this website; please go and cast a look at what you haven’t read yet— nay share what resonates with you, in order to spread the creators’ work and passion.

We could talk much longer about all those discoveries. But the adventure has to end. Thank you to all the participants (the selected ones & the others) for giving life to these three years of festival! Take care of yourselves and never stop making art.
